Mind you, I've seen a couple of episodes (not the whole thing) but I never did touch the manga.

So I gotta say, this is an extremely interesting manga, if only for the fact that there's a subtle but severe mood whiplash going on. What attracted me to it in the first place was the complete crack (and trust me, it IS funny) but as the manga goes on, things start getting pretty depressing. I mean, the humour and gags are still there and they're still amusing, but there's an underlying insanity to it. And not the good type of sanity. It's like Satou (main character) is slowly losing his mind (which is probably what is happening). Some of the things that the characters think are actually quite disturbing. The things that keep happening to Satou make me so angry and sorry for him at the same time. It gets annoying because every time he seems like he's gonna break out of his self-imposed isolation, something happens to pull him back in. It's infuriating. But what's annoying for a reader might well be the actual life of someone. Like, I know the mangaka is using Welcome To The N.H.K. as a way to alert people about how living as a hikikomori (shut-in) is. I think he did a good job.


Buh, I can't say more without giving stuff away. 'Sides, I haven't even finished reading it yet. But I'd recommend it to people who can stand some insanity and depression to get to a love story.
